Dillington Guitar Summer School and Festival
Now in its 9th year, this Summer School offers a wide-ranging programme of ensemble playing for classical guitarists of all ages and abilities. The course however, is not suitable for complete beginners. The emphasis is on participation, with students working in a non-competitive and supportive environment. In 2003, course director Peter Rueffer will be joined by full time tutors Lorraine Eastwood, Steve Marsh, Arne Brattland and special guest Bruce Grindlay (Harpsichord).

Students work in small ensemble groups (7-10 players) and in a guitar orchestra (30+ players) and are allocated parts in accordance with their technical standard and music reading ability (see booking form). In addition students of grade 5 level and above may wish to participate in performance classes for guitar duo and guitar and harpsichord. Those wishing to do so should indicate their choice(s) on the booking form. A creative music making class, open to all will offer an opportunity to learn and develop improvisational skills. Parts for the ensembles, orchestra and performance classes (where requested) will be made available one month before the course allowing some advance preparation to be made.

There will be performance opportunities for all in daily lunchtime recitals as well as in the student ensemble concert on the last day. A party for students and invited guests follows this concert and marks the end of the course.

A comprehensive selection of sheet music, recordings and accessories will be on sale throughout the week.

THE TUTORS
Peter Rueffer’s wide experience of chamber ensembles involving the guitar range from duo performances with Jason Carter to being a member of the contemporary music group Omega. He is best known however, through his work with the Pro Arte Guitar Trio, of which he is a founder member. With the trio he has recorded five CDs, undertaken several European tours and performed throughout the UK including many recitals at London’s Purcell Room and Wigmore Hall. His work as an arranger for guitar ensemble is well known and his settings for guitar orchestra were awarded first prize in the national guitar orchestra competitions of 1998 and 2000. He currently holds teaching posts at Christ’s Hospital School and Anglia University.

Lorraine Eastwood is well known both as a performer and teacher of the classical guitar. She played in a duo with the late Chris Kilvington for several years giving concerts in Germany, Russia, the Czech Republic, Ireland and throughout the UK. She has appeared at most of the UK’s guitar Festivals and Summer Schools and 2003 will mark her sixth year as a tutor and performer at Dillington. In 1994 she established her duo with violinist Gabrielle Sutcliffe and has more recently given a number of concerts with guitarist Steve Marsh.

Steve Marsh is a performer, teacher, composer, publisher and music reviewer for Classical Guitar magazine. He has given numerous recitals including live broadcasts for the BBC. He is a prolific composer for the guitar and his music has been both performed and recorded by some of the leading names in the guitar world. He currently performs in a duo with Lorraine Eastwood.

Arne Brattland was born in northern Norway and was educated at the Norwegian State Academy of Music in Oslo. Following further studies in London, with among others, David Russell and John Duarte, he gave his debut recital at the Wigmore Hall in 1988. Several prominent Norwegian composers have dedicated works to him and his arrangements and recordings of music by Edvard Grieg are widely known. A wide experience of chamber music includes performing with such as the Omega Players, the London guitar orchestra and the Norwegian ensemble KammeRana. He currently performs with the Arctic guitar trio and in duo with his wife, the guitarist Debra Adamson.
