Mannes College of Music Offers Spring Filled with the Sound of Guitars

The Mannes College of Music, the first American College to institute a guitar program (1956), will present numerous faculty and student recitals and special events from the guitar department during Spring and Summer 2002. All events are free to the public and take place in The Mannes Concert Hall at Mannes College of Music, 150 West 85th Street, New York, New York, unless otherwise noted.

Friday, April 5 at 8 pm
The Newman & Oltman Guitar Duo, Ensemble-in-Residence concert guitarists Laura Oltman and Michael Newman will perform duets by Spontini, Carulli, and Giuliani; also Michael Newman will perform the Five Preludes of Heitor Villa-Lobos as a preview of a May concert celebrating the 30th Anniversary of his debut recital.

Wednesday, April 10, 9:30 am until 12:30 pm: Eliot Fisk Master Class (Goldmark Hall)

Sunday, April 21 at 7:30 pm: Giacomo LaVita, student recital (Goldmark Hall)

Sunday, May 5 at 4:30 pm: Frank Iadevaia, graduate recital (Goldmark Hall)

Monday, May 6 at 8 pm
Giacomo LaVita, soloist, winner of Mannes Concerto Competition Rodrigo's Fantasy for a Gentleman with The Mannes Orchestra, David Hayes, conducting, at Miller Theater of Columbia University, 116th and Broadway

Wednesday, May 8 at 8 pm: Sonia Hernandez, graduate recital

Friday, May 10 at 8 pm: Mannes Guitar Ensemble concert

New York Guitar Seminar at Mannes (www.mannes.edu/guitar/ for complete tuition and schedule information), offering a week of intensive training and performance opportunities in New York City. New York-based faculty for the seminar includes: -The Newman & Oltman Guitar Duo -Sharon Isbin -Benjamin Verdery -Antigoni Goni -Frederic Hand along with guests Pablo Cohen, and Corey Christiansen, Baroque scholar Joel Lester, techniques of music instructor Srdjan Berdovic, and lecturers and panelists active in the New York music scene--including David Spelman (publicist; director, NY Guitar Festival), Lawrence del Casale (producer, Aranjuez Guitar Series at Carnegie Hall), and Paul Herzman (classical manager, Virgin Megastores).
