Stephen Marchionda is regarded as one of the finest international guitarists of his generation. Renown for exciting programming and rave reviews worldwide Mr. Marchionda will appear at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall on Saturday evening March 9th, 2002 at 8:30 PM as part of the Aranjuez Concert Series. A top prizewinner of several international competitions including both the Guitar Foundation of America (GFA) and the Segovia International. Mr. Marchionda has given acclaimed performances in London, Oxford, Cardiff, Scotland, Rome, Madrid, Granada, Athens and Copenhagen.

Stephen Marchionda's recital at Weill Recital Hall features two New York premieres. The preeminent British composer Nicholas Maw's Music of Memory, from which this concert program takes its inspiration. This work is a somewhat freely organized set of variations on the Intermezzo from Mendelssohn's String Quartet in A minor, opus 13. The other New York premier on this program is the Puerto Rican composer Ernesto Cordero's Suite Antillana. Evoking the atmosphere and style of the Spanish-speaking islands of the Greater Antilles an homage to Cuba, the Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico. Also included are Manuel María Ponce's Theme, 20 Variations and Fugue on Folia de Espana, (this performance features the newly discovered Prelude to this work), Robert Beaser's Shenandoah, and the beloved Sonata by the Spanish Antonio José.
